‘Russian Bear’ Jussupow joins the game in Bad Wiessee
A preview of the Bad Wiesse Chess Open by Gerald Hertneck
The Bad Wiessee International Chess Open with its longstanding tradition faces its ominous 13th running this autumn. Its internal organisation is undergoing some changes: the main responsibility for the event will go from hotelier Kurt Geiss to the tournament’s founder Horst Leckner, who, after his recent retirement, will dedicate himself fully to the task. The photo shows him with son Michael, who has been active in the background for many years.
Organisational matters are once again in the competent hands of Bad Wiessee’s tourist information centre - under the management of Peter Rie and his capable and dashing ladies. One great surprise is the unprecedented participation by ‘Russian Bear’ Artur Jussupow, who founded the tournament together with his partner Horst Leckner in 1997 and has been supporting it with his expert advice. Organisational responsibilities as well as other duties including his chess academy never permitted him to partake in the competition. Artur Jussupow has played many international tournaments for his country in the past and was represented in Wiessee by his daughter Ekaterina and others – the latter fulfilled the criteria for the Woman International Master title last year.
Chess in Bad Wiessee – this catchphrase stands for perfect organisational skills, for what must count as Germany’s most beautiful playing hall, for a strong assortment of players who stand a chance of qualifying for a title, and last but not least for two weeks at the idyllic shores of Lake Tegernsee. This agreeable combination attracts more than 400 participants every year, among them many regulars. These appreciate the personal atmosphere and the daily bulletins reporting on results and statistics. Finally, some of the players might even be prone to stroll over to the classy casino on the outskirts of town – despite the obvious differences between roulette and chess.
Check it out in Bad Wiessee – where tradition and quality come together to give you a great time!
